Local authorities & partners

Your trails deserve to be seen by hikers who come without a car.

Caminada matches SNCF stations, liO bus stops and hiking data across 14 départements of Occitania and Lot-et-Garonne. The trails your authority shares appear on the map, linked to the stations and bus stops from which people set off on foot. Sharing is free, and you can ask for your data to be removed at any time.

The situation

Today

Hiking information that is scattered and rarely presented to train users.

  • Hike pages are spread across several portals (Geotrek, departmental websites, private apps).
  • Rail connections are never matched with trailheads.
  • Hikers without a car (young people, city dwellers, tourists) do not know where to start.
  • Overcrowded sites concentrate visitor flows while trails of equal quality remain little known.
With Caminada

A single map that showcases your trails from your stations.

  • Your hiking data presented in a single interface, matched with the active stations in your area.
  • A hiker getting off the train knows straight away which trails can be reached on foot from the station.
  • No cost, no commercial competition: Caminada remains an independent site, free and without advertising.
  • Your data remains yours — credited, attributed, never resold.

Sharing your data with Caminada

Caminada already relies on the Geotrek instances of the Parc national des Cévennes, the PNR des Grands Causses, Pyrénées-Méditerranée and the departmental councils of Tarn, Lozère and Aude, on the PDIPR of Hérault and Gers, and on the routes provided by the Volvestre tourist office. Each source remains under the licence chosen by its producer (Licence Ouverte, Creative Commons or the producer's own conditions), and the producer is credited on each hike page.

You already have a Geotrek instance or a PDIPR portal

Integration is quick.

A written agreement is enough to connect your existing source to Caminada's station and trail matching pipeline. Your data is then refreshed automatically, with no action needed on your part.

You do not have an open digital source yet

We can discuss it.

GPX files, an internal table or database, a Geotrek instance in preparation: contact me to see what is possible. Some areas (Ariège, Haute-Garonne, Lot, Hautes-Pyrénées, Tarn-et-Garonne, Lot-et-Garonne) currently have no dedicated official source on Caminada — your trails are under-represented there. This is all the more regrettable because adding liO buses has created starting points in towns and villages without a station, which now only need documented trails.

In return, your trails appear on a map used by hikers who are looking specifically for routes they can reach without a car — an audience that conventional hiking portals rarely reach.

How it works

Step 1
First contact
You tell me about your existing data sources (Geotrek, PDIPR, internal files) and the area concerned.
Step 2
Written agreement
A short agreement sets out the permission to integrate the data and the attribution conditions, before any processing. See the model agreement (.txt, in French)
Step 3
Integration
Your trails are matched with the active stations in your area and published on the Caminada map.
Step 4
Ongoing updates
For trails integrated manually, the data producer needs to request each update. If the data is retrieved through an API, it can be updated automatically every month, like the OSM and Geotrek data.

Frequently asked questions

Which data sources are used?
Caminada matches SNCF stations from open data (ODbL), liO bus stops and timetables published by the Région Occitanie (ODbL and specific conditions), walking isochrones and base maps from the IGN Géoplateforme (Licence Ouverte 2.0), OpenStreetMap for additional coverage (ODbL), and hiking data from parks, départements and tourist offices. The latter remains under its producer's licence: open data for the Parc national des Cévennes, Licence Ouverte for the Gers and Hérault PDIPR, Creative Commons BY-NC-SA (non-commercial reuse) for Lozère, and the producer's own conditions for the other Geotrek instances and for the Volvestre tourist office. Details for each source are given in the legal notice.
Our authority does not have a public Geotrek instance. Is that a problem?
No. If you have hiking data in another form (GPX, internal database, spreadsheet files), it can be looked at case by case. If you plan to open a Geotrek instance or a PDIPR portal soon, contact me beforehand so that the integration can be prepared.
Does this commit us to anything?
No. There is no invoicing and no service contract: only a written agreement authorising the use of the data is needed, specifying the source, the licence and how attribution is given. You can ask for your data to be removed at any time.
What happens to the ownership of our data?
Your data remains your property. Caminada only republishes it with attribution, in accordance with the licence under which you distribute it. No fees, no exclusivity.
What happens if Caminada stops?
Caminada is run by one person, which is a fact that a public partner should be aware of. Two concrete safeguards limit the risk. First, Caminada only republishes your data with attribution — there is no technical dependency in which your data would exist only on Caminada; it remains fully available from your own Geotrek instance, PDIPR or source file. Second, the integration can be reversed at any time (see above): if the project stops, you do not need to do anything — the map stops being updated, with no consequence for your data and no obligation on your part. The generation pipeline is documented and reproducible, which also limits the risk of losing know-how if the project is unavailable for a long period.
GDPR and personal data?
Viewing the map requires no personal data: no tracking cookies, no compulsory registration, no intrusive analytics. The account (to find your logbook on several devices) and the newsletter are optional and described in the legal notice. Visitor statistics are aggregated and anonymous, measured by Matomo installed on our own server, without cookies and without transfer to third parties. GDPR-compliant by design.
Is a custom design or a subdomain dedicated to our area possible?
No. Caminada only offers free data sharing to the common map: no customised instance and no dedicated subdomain.
